The Ultimate Ayurvedic Tea for a Balanced Menstrual Cycle
Usha Anandi. 17| SEPTEMBER | 2024
Years ago, I was ready to try anything in the name of science. Survive solely on coconut milk for 10 days? Check. Shove coffee up my butt (known as a coffee enema among well-mannered-folk)? You got it.
I experimented my butt off (get it?) for the sake of learning as much as possible about the what, why, and how of different cleanses, fasts, and detoxes.
And while I learned so much about what works and what doesn’t, I also totally wrecked my Agni, or inner fire. That meant constipation, bloating, gas, and ultimately, super painful and irregular periods.
Despite being neck-deep in trendy health fads, I used to keel over in pain every time I’d bleed – and it helped me realize that:
Extreme eating habits weren’t getting me anywhere
Western cleanses often leave us depleted, stripping away essential nutrients and weakening our systems. Ayurvedic cleanses, on the other hand, involve many things – one of them is strengthening your digestive fire (called agni) to help you digest and eliminate toxins naturally.
When your agni is strong and regular, you can absorb what you need and release what you don’t.
If you’re struggling with womb health issues, have long given up on solving your digestive issues, or feel like your relationship to health needs some work…. Come learn Ayurveda with me in my year-long Ayurvedic Mentorship, Wise Womban Way.

If you’re so done with PMS, painful periods, and popping pills – let me introduce you to this centuries-old secret…
Meet CCF Tea.
CCF tea will help you:
One of my teachers once called CCF tea “Ayurvedic Windex” and for good reason. CCF tea is a daily, gentle cleanse that keeps your system running smoothly and as a result, keeps your periods painless and mood swings in check.
And an additional nugget of Ayurvedic wisdom: if you’ve been relying on supplements without seeing results, it might be time to focus on your digestion. When your Agni is weak, even the most expensive vitamins and herbs won’t be absorbed properly – they’ll just pass through…
…Which means instead of that radiant glow you’re after, you’ll get super-nutrient-enriched poop.
Sipping on CCF tea throughout the day is a BIG step toward getting those nutrients to penetrate deep in your body. This simple, yet potent blend of cumin, coriander, and fennel gently supports your digestion and nurtures your overall health, especially your reproductive system.
Here’s what each of them do…
CUMIN
A heating spice that kindles Agni, making it easier to digest heavier foods. But be careful – depending on your unique constitution, too much can be overly heating! Cumin is excellent for improving digestion and reducing bloating.
CORIANDER
Cooling and slightly bitter, coriander balances the heat of cumin, making CCF tea tridoshic – suitable for all 3 Ayurvedic body types. This spice is particularly beneficial for PMS, as it reduces excess heat and inflammation.
FENNEL
Sweet and cooling, fennel harmonizes the blend, offering relief from bloating and calming the digestive system. Fennel is especially helpful during premenstrual times when the liver – responsible for processing emotions like anger and frustration – works overtime. If you experience mood swings or irritability around your period, fennel is a wonderful ally.
Have you ever wondered why digestive issues often go hand-in-hand with irregular periods, cramps, or even more complex reproductive health concerns like endometriosis or infertility? According to Ayurveda, the root of many of these issues lies in your digestive fire, and how well your body processes both food and emotions.
How to Make CCF Tea
The beauty of CCF tea is its simplicity. Here’s what you need to make a basic version at home:
- 2.5 cups of water
- ¼ teaspoon each of cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and fennel seeds
You can either pour the boiling water over the seeds, or for a more potent and medicinal CCF tea, bring the water to a boil, add the seeds, and let them simmer for 2-3 minutes. This activates the healing properties of the spices.
Strain, pour the tea into a thermos, and sip it throughout the day. Adjust the recipe to suit your body’s needs!
Pro Tip: If you run hot, you can reduce the amount of cumin or replace it with cardamom for a gentler, sweet spice that still aids digestion.
In Ayurveda, your body’s ability to digest food goes beyond just breaking down what you eat. Strong digestion ensures that nutrients reach every tissue, including your reproductive organs.
When your digestive fire (Agni) is weak, toxins known as ama – sticky, undigested sludge build-up, clogging your body’s pathways of nourishment. This can lead to bloating, lethargy, and even more serious health concerns like painful periods or fertility challenges.
When we nourish our digestive fire, we allow nutrients to flow freely to all our tissues, including the reproductive ones.
