3 Secrets To Womb Health In Autumn According To Ayurveda

Usha Anandi. 31| AUGUST | 2024

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve felt drawn to the colorful autumn leaves and mystical turn of the seasons…

But when the scorching summer sun sets, everything starts to change.

In nature, but also inside of our bodies. And even if I love the fall, I always used to feel the effects.

If you always come to the end of summer feeling drained, depleted, and like you’ve been plucked right out of your roots, you’re not alone.

According to Ayurveda, every season has its set of ‘Gunas’, the different attributes that make it unique. These Gunas affect our insides just as much as they impact the world around us.

For fall, those are: cold, subtle, rough, dry, mobile, and light

If September has always meant chapped lips and cold hands for you, I want to share 3 of my favorite wellness tips for the fall.

If you don’t listen closely and ground yourself, the winds of change that come with this season can easily throw your digestive tract off balance and dry out your reproductive radiance…

That’s why I want to invite you to my Wise Womban Way mentorship.

In this year-long Ayurvedic mentorship program, I’ll share everything I’ve learned about living in alignment with the seasons over the past 10+ years, and help you rediscover the innate wisdom of your womb that lives inside of all of us.

Read on for three of the habits I practice to be well during the fall, and why you should integrate them into your daily life too.

1. Lifestyle Tip: Practice Abhyanga

Abhyanga is the practice of massaging warm oil onto your body. This is the practice that helped me rebuild my body after periods of deep depletion, helped support my immune system, and that I always practice before I leave the house to give myself an extra layer of protection.

The beautiful thing about Abhyanga is that you get the energy and love from your own fingers and hands, and you get the qualities of the oil you decide to use.

In Ayurveda, the word for fat or oil is Snehana. It’s no coincidence that that same word in Sanskrit means love. It’s long been said that oil for the body is like love for the soul, and Abhyanga is living proof of that.

Abhyanga is perfect for those who:

  • Have dry skin
  • Struggle with infertility
  • Feel depleted and out of balance
  • Would like to give their lymphatic system a boost
  • Suffer from chronic stress, anxiety, nervousness, or insomnia

The unctuousness of the oil balances the dryness of fall, and boosts overall immunity. Click here to sign up for Wise Womban Way and learn everything about Abhyanga.

2. Eating Tip: Cook & Spice Your Food

Many people focus on which foods are good or bad but often overlook how food preparation affects digestion. For example, when I was a raw vegan in Costa Rica, I ate only raw fruits and vegetables for about four months.

Despite the organic, hand-harvested produce, I gained 20-30 pounds, developed acne on my jaw and chin, had recurring yeast infections, and my period completely disappeared.

These were clear signs that a raw vegan diet wasn’t supporting my constitution. Raw vegetables have a cold, dry, and light quality, which weakened my Agni and made it hard for me to break down food. I felt tired, gained weight, and overall wasn’t thriving.

As fall approaches and the weather turns colder and drier, our digestion may weaken, leading to issues like anxiety, stress, and insomnia. To support your digestive system:

  • Cook your foods: Grill, sauté, or make stews to pre-digest your meals and support your Agni
  • Use warming spices: Ginger, cardamom, and cumin are some spices that add warmth and make food easier to digest

In Ayurveda, it’s said, “You are what you digest”, not “You are what you eat.” Cooking and spicing your meals properly can nourish your body and balance your Agni. To learn more about your own constitution and how to eat in a way that nourishes your body, join Wise Womban Way.

3. Medicine-Making Tip: Make Your Own Ghee

We’ve already talked about the importance of oil, but ghee goes far beyond any other oil. In the Rig-Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas, it is said about ghee that “Agni, the fire, loves them and is satisfied”.

Ghee’s ultimate superpower, or its Prabhava, is that it’s kindling for your Agni. It helps sustain the Agni, the most important part of our digestion, and such a central part of our health overall.

Besides being fantastic for your vitality, reproductive health, and immunity, ghee is also a powerful vessel for carrying medicinal herbs deeper into the tissue.

What to know before making ghee at home:

  • Use a stainless steel, ceramic, or cast iron pot to avoid contamination
  • Use unsalted butter
  • If available, use cultured, organic, grass-fed butter
  • The lower the heat you cook your ghee on, the better
  • Keep your ghee in glass containers

In my year-long Wise Womban Way mentorship, I talk all about these three pillars of healthy living through the seasons according to Ayurveda: lifestyle, eating, and medicine making.
