My Favorite (Non-Hormonal) Birth Control Method

In high school, I was given three options for birth control:

  1. Abstinence
  2. Condoms
  3. Oral contraceptives (which I’ll refer to as “the Pill”)

I was a curious teenager, so one wasn’t a sure option.

The second seemed difficult and risky…

The third seemed like the most sure-way to prevent pregnancy…

Plus, it was recommended by my Mother (a nurse practitioner) and my Doctor, who said it would even help me with my PMS, my hormonal acne, and maybe even make my breasts grow.

It seemed too good to be true, a magic pill that let me explore my sexuality, prevent pregnancy, and ward off irritating symptoms associated with puberty?

I was 15, and I was in.

So I took the pill religiously everyday around the same time and at first, things seemed fine…

But you know what they say; what seems to be good to be true, probably is.

Within a few months I started to gain weight. Soon I felt irritated by everything, and I would cry for seemingly no reason once or twice a week.

Maybe it was just the brand? So I tried another, and then another.

It was almost four years and three brands of pills until I said enough was enough.

By that time, I was experiencing continued weight gain, cystic acne on my chin, jaw, and neck, mood swings, digestive issues, and hair loss.

Let me be clear in saying I support every woman and person with a womb in choosing the contraceptive method that is right for them. The pill is a lifesaver for some, and a privilege for many.

For me, the pill was my catalyst to walk the path of womb work, and for that… I am grateful.

But still, I find myself often wondering… what if I was shown another way?

What if I had been taught how to work WITH my cycle, instead of stop it all together?

What If I had been told that I could track my cycle to prevent pregnancy, and get to know my body more and more along the way?

I believe we all deserve the tools to live in harmony with our menstrual cycle, which is why I created our Breathing, Bleeding, Being Online Menstrual Reclamation Course.

Whether you’re looking to conceive, curb painful periods, or correct hormonal imbalance, this educational course has information that is invaluable on your journey. It’s all the things I WISH I knew before I started walking this path, compiled in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step method.

I suffered through almost four years of my life before I found out about the Fertility Awareness Method.

In the video below, I tell you why it’s my favorite form of non-hormonal contraception.
