Before we go any further, we have to get a few things out of the way…
First, please, please, PLEASE can we stop calling menstrual products “feminine hygiene” or “sanitary products”?
Menstrual blood is not dirty, smelly, or something to be ashamed of.
If you want to learn the science and the sacred of WHY your menstrual cycle is not a source of shame, but instead a source of POWER, then I have a gift for you.
Rather than saying sanitary pads, or hygiene products, I say menstrual products. Because in essence, that’s what they are – products you use while you’re menstruating.
And now that you’ve gotten this far, let me frame our conversation by pointing out the HUGE disparity between womben who don’t have access to ANY menstrual products and those who are privileged enough to choose which product they use based on how it may or may not disrupt the flow of life-force energy in their body.
Below I’ll be sharing my three favorite menstrual products.
Please keep in mind that what’s right for ME, isn’t necessarily right for you.
And although I get a thousand questions a year about each one of the products listed below, it could be possible that your favorite way to soak up your menstrual blood isn’t listed.
A few of the important things to consider when choosing your period product:
Yep, that’s right. In the U.S. period products are taxed but golf memberships and erectile dysfunction medication is not… Can you say p-a-t-r-i-a-r-c-h-y?
I know that cost is something that many of us have to consider. So I’ll be rating each period product from most affordable to most costly.

When I became a Mother, I started taking note of my priorities.
And although we would all love to never use plastic, use only reusable menstrual products, eat only fresh organic food, and cloth diaper our babies… sometimes we have to choose our priorities.
Because convenience is something many value in our modernized world, I’ll be rating each product from least convenient to most convenient.

Most of our readers are interested in using menstrual products that are not only good for the Earth, but good for their bodies as well. I’ll be rating each menstrual product from least in alignment to most in alignment.
Pads
There are two kinds of pads: reusable and disposable pads. Depending on your lifestyle and values, one might be better for you than the other.
REUSABLE PADS Out of all the options on this list, I’ve used reusable pads the most.
Cost 💰💰💰 • •
Although reusable pads do require an initial investment (ranging from $10 – $12 USD for a pad), if you can swing the initial investment, you save a hefty amount in the long run as you never have to buy period products again!
Convenience ⭐★★★★
Reusable pads DO take a considerable amount of energy to use as you have to be strategic about washing them and keeping them clean.
Whether or not reusable pads are right for you will depend largely on your lifestyle.
As I work from home (and menstruate from home), it’s never been a major issue for me.
When I was actively attending births or supporting postpartum mamas while menstruating and I couldn’t offer the attention that reusable pads required then I would use disposable pads or a moon cup instead.
Alignment 💖💖💖💖💖
Out of all the products on this page, I feel that reusable pads win the prize for being the most aligned menstrual product.
Here’s why I love them so much:
1. Waste saved
So much waste is saved by using a reusable product. Choosing something that isn’t disposable is an amazing way to honor your period AND the Earth.
2. Connection with blood
It’s so easy to connect with your blood when you use reusable pads.
I wash mine in a bowl of clear water and as I ring them out again and again, I become familiar with the color, texture, and smell of the blood, which gives me a snapshot of the health of my organs and the energetic flow in my body from the previous month.
During our menstruation, downward moving energy is dominant in our body.
It’s this downward moving energy that draws the blood out of the body, cleansing both our physical, energetic, and spiritual bodies.
When the blood leaves the body on it’s own, the energy is not disrupted. When the blood is caught in a period product (like a moon cup or a tampon) and manually removed, the downward moving energy is disrupted.
One of my Ayurvedic teachers shared with me that this disruption of this energy is thought to worsen bloating, cramps, cysts, and even endometriosis.
Disposable pads are great when you’re in a pinch or balancing 10 different things with two hands (new mamas and working mamas say HEY!).
A few things to look out for when purchasing disposable pads: so many disposable pads have fragrance (because our society is largely ashamed of the smell of menstrual blood) or are bleached with chlorine.
Both of these can irritate the sensitive skin of your vulva and vagina as well as disrupt pH balance.
Although the initial investment may be the smallest number on this list (ranging from $3 – $10 dollars for a box).
The average womban or person who bleeds will experience 450 periods in their lifetime, so that’s a lifetime cost of at least $1350.
Woah, that ADDS up! Plus, everytime you buy a box of disposable pads you’re paying a value-added tax thanks to the dreaded Tampon Tax I mentioned above.
Convenience ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Disposable products will always be more convenient as they’re largely available for purchase in case you forget them, and once you’re done with them, you simply throw them away.
This can be ideal for situations like travel or attending births.
And YES, I have been that girl in the airplane bathroom with a full menstrual cup wondering where the F to empty it.
Alignment 💖 💖 ♥ ♥ ♥
I went back and forth between a one and a two on the alignment rating. I chose two because disposable pads create a lot of unnecessary waste for the Earth to break down, but they also honor the full release of blood from the body without disrupting downward moving energy.

Moon Cups
Although most people are just discovering moon cups, the first cup (also referred to as a menstrual cup) was created out of rubber in 1937!
The most popular brand seems to be the Diva Cup, but in case a Diva Cup doesn’t fit you properly, leaks, or feels uncomfortable, there are DOZENS of other brands with different shapes and sizes.
Ranging from $22 – $37 USD, moon cups have a higher investment with an opportunity to save a LOT of money in the long run vs. buying disposable products.
Convenience ★★
Using a moon cup helped me deepen my relationship with my blood immensely.
It was so easy to see the color, texture, quantity, and smell of my blood while using one, and I LOVED it.
At the time, I was living in the jungle of Costa Rica and I would mix my blood with water and give them to my garden plants (something I still do with my reusable pads).
However, it’s not always convenient to use a moon cup as you have to make sure they are aligned correctly or they will be uncomfortable and/or leak.
When I started to tune in deeper to the energy in my body while using one, I intuitively felt that energy was pooling in my womb rather than purging.
Once I switched to reusable pads again and allowed gravity to do its work, I felt this sensation go away.
And remember, what felt right for me… might not feel right for you! Building self-awareness around what feels good and what doesn’t is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself on your womb healing journey.

Period Underwear
When period underwear came out, I was amazed.
I was living in Costa Rica on the Caribbean Coast in a tiny beach town when a few of my friends came from Canada and they brought them in their suitcases.
To say I was flabbergasted that something like this could exist was an understatement.
Originally in this blog, I recommended the company THINX… but recently I woke up to an awful discovery I want to give you a heads up about.
THINX recently settled a class action lawsuit with customers who claimed that third-party testing revealed their period underwear had PFAS, a huge problem for a company claiming to be organic, sustainable, and toxin-free. PFAS are human made and known as forever-chemicals.
They can be found in non-stick cookware, certain makeup brands, and have even been recorded in rainwater (wonderful!). High levels of them have been linked to increased cancer risk and reproductive problems. AKA you don’t want your vulva marinating in these chemicals.
The lesson?
Always go for period underwear that is third-party tested and verified to be what they claim to be. A few brands that fit the bill are MODIBODI, WUKA (I love that this brand offers period pants that grow up to three sizes – great for changing bodies like teenagers or to just make it more affordable!), and Aisle.
Cost 💰💰💰💰💰
Each pair of period underwear costs between $25 – $35 USD. On the first few heavy days of my period, I typically use 1 or 2 pairs of period underwear.
In total, most of the women I know who use them have 4 – 5 pairs, making the total investment around $100 – $175.
This is by far the most expensive option out of the three period products listed in this blog, which is why period underwear have received a 5 on the cost scale.
Convenience ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Everyone I know who uses underwear is absolutely obsessed with them for their comfort and convenience.
They represent one of the most convenient options on this list along with disposable pads, so if convenience is an issue for you and you have the funds to invest – they might be great for you, too.
Alignment 💖💖💖💖💖
One of the aspects about period underwear that I love is that they support the full release of period blood from the body while also fully supporting the earth as a reusable product.
Unlike disposable pads, you can use them again and again without adding more waste to a landfill which is a BIG win.
Choosing which period product is right for you is merely a part of learning how to care for yourself in your menstruating years.
In my Free Power of The Period Workshop, I break down the four phases of the menstrual cycle and teach you about the spiritual, energetic, and physical changes that take place throughout the month so you can live and plan your life according to your innate feminine rhythm.
