We began this week with the Autumnal Equinox and Sun’s entrance into Libra on Monday September 23rd. The New Moon in Libra arrives this Saturday at 2:27pm EDT. The 3-4 day period leading up to a New Moon is the Balsamic phase – when the moon is waning out of sight. This can be a low energy time when you feel compelled to be more introverted and introspective. The new Moon begins a new cycle and brings in a different energy. This is great time to plant seeds, set intentions, journal, brainstorm and allow yourself to remain open and receptive to guidance.

The Libra Moon cycle will bring up the following themes: peace, harmony, balance, relationships, marriage, partnerships, the law, justice, fairness and cooperation. Libra is an air sign ruled by the planet Venus. Libra dislikes confrontation preferring to keep the peace at almost any cost. Typically those with a strong dose of Libra in their birth charts are easy to be around and are skilled at seeing all sides of an issue. This can make them good mediators and lawyers. With the Venusian influence, Libra revels in the world’s finest aesthetics – art work, designer clothes, fancy food and drink, ornate architecture and the like. Libra’s invitation is for us to create the space to enjoy our closest friends and lovers as well as the finer things in life. Buying yourself a bouquet of flowers, carving out some extra time to spend with your partner or best friend, visiting an art museum, trying on expensive clothing even if you have no intention of buying them are all great things to do during this next lunar month.

Libra is represented by the scale pointing to its penchant for balance, harmony, justice, the law, fairness, cooperation, mediation and peace. The interesting thing about balance is that it’s an illusion. It has become a familiar buzzword in the last few decades as it seems like just about everyone is striving for things like “work/life” balance and better “balance” overall. Balance occurs when there is equal and opposite tension – picture a see-saw. A see-saw rarely stays in that perfectly balanced position – usually it’s moving up or down. Balance is the entire process as opposed to the state when the see-saw is perfectly horizontal. Our lives are the same.

When we start to slide too far down in one area we usually feel compelled to try to lighten the load on the other side to achieve a more equal status. Instead of being fixated on balance let us shift our attention to the concept of space. It’s usually when we have no space in our lives for rest, creativity, pleasure, etc. that we feel like we are out of whack, out of balance. As Gabrielle Roth says “In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: “When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” Balance seems so compelling because we’ve forgotten how to “be.” We are so used to exerting, striving and doing that the concept of balance seems like a mirage in the desert that we are always chasing and forever out of reach. The way to find balance is to pause – to stop – to rest. It’s possible to pause even when facing an incredibly packed schedule. The energy you bring will determine whether or not things feel balanced.

During this Libra Moon cycle, I invite you to slow down and practice just being. Balance is something that can be experienced by dropping into a state of receptivity. From this quiet, receptive state we can feel balanced from the inside out.

Or maybe, it was from the words your Mother whispered under her breath.
